This website is devoted to the paper helicopter experiment - a project which became an integral part of every modern course on Design Of Experiments. For The Students The paper helicopter experiment lab provides efficient and fun way of learning material relevant to the course. By completing the project you will become familiar with the fundamental concepts of experimental planning and gain knowledge of the theory behind two-level fractional factorial designs. The project is designed to imitate industrial needs and requires generating real data.

Get your stopwatch and volunteer helper ready. One person should be in charge of dropping the whirly bird, and the Helicopter lab person should use the stopwatch. You will need to start the stopwatch as soon as the whirly bird is dropped, and stop it as soon as it hits the ground.
You should drop the whirly bird from a high place. If possible, drop it from a second story window or balcony but not on a windy dayor have an adult stand on a chair or ladder.
Make sure you drop the whirly bird from the exact same height each time. Drop the whirly bird and use the stopwatch to time how long it takes to hit the ground. Record this value in Table 1, in the box for "Trial 1" next to Helicopter lab paper clips. Repeat step 6 two more times for your second and third trials.
Record these values in your data table. Now, add a paper clip to the bottom of your whirly bird, as shown in Figure 2. A paper clip attached to the bottom of the whirly bird to add weight.
Repeat steps 6—7 with one paper clip. Remember to record your results in your data table, in the row for "1" paper clip. Repeat steps 6—7 for two, three, and four paper clips. Make sure you record all of your results in the correct row in your data table.
You should have three trials for each number of paper clips.
Ask an adult to help you calculate the average fall time for each number of paper clips. Record this value in the "Average" column in your data table. If you want to calculate the average yourself, you need to add up the values for each trial and then divide by three. For example, if your fall times for 0 paperclips were 6.
Make a line graph with the number of paper clips on the x-axis horizontal line and the fall time in seconds on the y-axis vertical line.
Ask an adult or use the Create a Graph website if you need help making a graph. Did the whirly bird fall faster, slower, or stay the same as you added more paper clips? Lab: Scientific Method – Helicopter Problem: Does the length of the helicopter blades affect the length of flight?
Hypothesis: If the blades are (shorter/longer), then the flight time with (increase/decrease). Helicopter Liftoff: How Does the Speed of the Rotor Affect the Amount of Lift? Record the weight of the helicopter in your lab notebook. The lift provided when the helicopter is hovering equals the weight of the helicopter.
